[외교] Armenia and Azerbaidjan. Security Developments and Cooperation Perspectives with the European Union

아르메니아 / 아제르바이잔 국외연구자료 연구보고서 - Euro-Atlantic Resilience Centre 발간일 : 2024-01-11 등록일 : 2024-01-12 원문링크

On September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan gained full control over the separatist region of NagornoKarabakh after a military offensive that lasted less than 24 hours, during which local separatist armed forces capitulated, clearly outnumbered by Azerbaijani forces. Armenia, the main security guarantor for Nagorno-Karabakh, unsuccessfully requested the support of the Russian Federation, its traditional ally, and the intervention of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, of which it is a member. Shortly after (on September 24), Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev hosted a meeting with his counterpart and ally, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the Azerbaijani exclave of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, a territory within Armenia. The meeting reignited the issue of opening a land corridor controlled by Azerbaijan between the Azerbaijani exclave and the main part of Azerbaijan through Armenian territory. This work is an analytical study addressing the tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan against the backdrop of territorial disputes over control of the separatist Nagorno-Karabakh Region, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, and the Zangezur region, how we got to the current situation, and these states’ interactions with the European Union.
