In 2016, women in some of the poorest and most marginalized households in Afghanistan received a support package, aimed at helping them create sustainable livelihoods on a path out of poverty. At midline, two years after the asset transfer, results from a randomized control trial in Afghanistan’s Balkh province showed transformative impacts, reflected in a reduction of poverty by 20 percentage points compared to the control group. Households were able to increase consumption, reduce food insecurity, and improve income and revenues, psychological well-being, school attendance, and physical health. Not only did the program improve the lives of women, men, boys and girls in these households, but it also helped reduce gender gaps and improve women’s empowerment.
